About this position
PhD Studentship at the University of East Anglia, based within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP), investigating how unusual DNA and RNA structures called G-quadruplexes (G4s) regulate fungal growth and infection.
This project focuses on Aspergillus fumigatus, an important human fungal pathogen, and aims to test whether G4s act as molecular switches that control the metabolic changes required for spore germination, hyphal development, biofilm formation, and antifungal susceptibility. Fungal infections are a major global health challenge and are increasingly difficult to treat because of antifungal resistance.
The successful PhD student will receive multidisciplinary training in molecular microbiology, fungal genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, metabolomics, microscopy, structural biology, and NMR spectroscopy. Research activities include genome-wide mapping of G4 formation, engineering targeted mutants, analysing metabolic changes, and investigating fungal cell-wall remodelling and drug response.
The studentship is fully funded for 4 years and includes tuition fees, an annual stipend for living costs, and a Research Training Support Grant. The 2026/27 stipend rate is £21,805, with £5,000 per year additional training support. NRPDTP students also complete a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS) during the programme.
Applicants should normally hold or expect to obtain at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or a closely related subject. An English language level equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component is required. The project is open to candidates from all backgrounds and the programme emphasizes inclusive and supportive research culture.
Application deadline: 30 November 2026. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2, 3, and 4 February 2027. Intended start date: 1 October 2027.
