About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity at The University of Manchester, UK: The President's Doctoral Scholarship supports a four-year project titled Molecular Quantum Sensors for High-Resolution Immunomagnetic Mapping of Cancer Cells.
The interdisciplinary research combines molecular chemistry, 2D materials, quantum sensing and cancer biology. The project will develop molecular quantum sensors based on spin-active organic molecules and use optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), magnetic nanoparticle-labelled biomarkers and related microscopy methods to achieve high-resolution immunomagnetic imaging of cancer cells.
Research themes include molecular synthesis and engineering of spin-active organic materials; 2D materials, heterostructures and nanofabrication; quantum sensing, spin physics and ODMR microscopy; magnetic nanoparticle-based biomarker detection; and translational applications in cancer biology, biomedical imaging and diagnostics.
The supervisory team comprises Dr Ashok Keerthi, Dr Benjamin Jones and Dr Kiran Batta. The studentship is open to UK and international applicants with backgrounds in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Biophysics or related disciplines.
Funding includes tuition fees, a UKRI-rate stipend, a £1,000 annual enhancement and research training support. The application deadline is 18 December 2026, with an expected start in September 2027.
