About this position
The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at King's College London is offering the Hans Rausing Doctoral Scholarship for PhD and Masters-level study in the history of science and/or technology. This prestigious scholarship is open to Home, EU, and Overseas applicants and provides full funding, including tuition and fees at any rate, a generous annual stipend (£22,780 based on UKRI 2025/26), and a research allowance. The scholarship supports two schemes: a 1+3 award (MA plus PhD) and a 3-year PhD-only award. The Centre is internationally recognised for its research and teaching in the history of science and technology, and students will join a vibrant academic community within the Department of History.
Applicants should demonstrate an outstanding academic record and research potential in the history of science and/or technology. For the 3-year PhD award, candidates must already hold a Master’s degree in History or a related humanities or social science field, with a strong history of science and technology component or relevant research experience. For the 1+3 award, applicants should apply to one of the History MA programmes, with progression to doctoral study conditional on satisfactory completion of the MA. Research projects in the history of medicine are generally not eligible, except where they overlap with the history of science and technology; applicants are encouraged to discuss project suitability with a prospective supervisor.
To apply, candidates must submit a sample of written work, a personal statement (1-2 pages), and a research proposal (1,000-1,500 words plus bibliography) outlining the historical questions, significance, relevant historiography, and sources. There is no separate application form for the Hans Rausing Scholarship; applicants should apply to either the History MA or the History Research PhD programme via King's College London’s electronic application system and indicate their interest in the scholarship to their prospective supervisor. The application deadline is 17 April 2026 (23:59 UK time). Awards will be announced by mid-May 2026.
The Hans Rausing Scholarship offers a unique opportunity for students passionate about the history of science and technology to pursue advanced research in a supportive and well-funded environment. The Centre encourages applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds and interests, provided their research aligns with the core themes of science and technology history.
