About this position
Leiden University is offering the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) for students joining a full-time Master's degree programme at Leiden University. This is a study scholarship rather than a job opening, and it is aimed at excellent applicants across several faculties, including Archaeology, Humanities, Medicine/LUMC, Governance and Global Affairs, Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences, and Science.
The scholarship is available for Master's programmes starting in September and is especially relevant for students with strong academic records. Applicants are expected to have achieved excellent results in prior study, typically comparable to being in the top 10% of graduates in their previous programme. The scholarship is open to non-EEA/non-EFTA students, with exceptions for applicants to Advanced LLM programmes and the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, which have no nationality restriction.
The award provides partial tuition fee support at one of five levels: €10,000, €15,000, €17,500, €18,500, or €19,000 of the tuition fee. It is not a full scholarship, and recipients must still cover remaining costs themselves. Non-EEA recipients must also provide proof of sufficient funds for visa/residence permit purposes.
To apply, first submit an online application for admission to a Master's programme at Leiden University. After that, return to the application portal, open the Scholarships section, and select the LExS if it becomes visible. You must upload a motivation letter (PDF, max. 500 words) and submit the scholarship application before the deadline. Late applications are not considered.
Deadline: 1 December 2026.
