About this position
The Max Planck School of Biomedical AI (BMAI) offers a fully funded, three-year PhD programme at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the life sciences. The programme is designed for outstanding candidates who want to develop computational methods for challenging biomedical and biological problems within an international, highly interdisciplinary research environment.
BMAI connects leading universities and research institutions across Germany and focuses on four major research areas: understanding molecular and cellular systems, protein and molecule design, learning complex biological traits from multi-scale data, and neural network exploration. Doctoral researchers benefit from supervision by two BMAI Fellows, advanced interdisciplinary training through recurring one-week schools, structured mentoring, professional development, and access to state-of-the-art research environments across participating institutions.
The programme welcomes applicants with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics, or a related discipline. Candidates from the life sciences are also encouraged to apply if they have strong computational skills and significant programming experience. The position is especially suitable for students interested in biomedical AI, machine learning, data-driven life sciences, and computational research across multiple scales of biological complexity.
The first BMAI cohort accepts applications from 2026-09-01 to 2026-12-01, with the PhD programme starting in September 2027. Funding is described as fully funded, with competitive employment contracts at participating universities and research institutions, plus support for annual participation in an international scientific conference. Applicants should apply online via the BMAI website.
