About this position
The International Max Planck Research School for Biology and Computation (IMPRS-BAC) is recruiting doctoral candidates for a 2027 start at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics and Freie Universität Berlin in Berlin, Germany.
This interdisciplinary PhD program sits at the intersection of molecular life sciences and computational sciences. It is designed for graduates with backgrounds in molecular biology, biochemistry, mathematics, bioinformatics, or closely related areas, and offers advanced training across both experimental and computational research. Students can engage with topics such as epigenetics, developmental biology, gene regulation, RNA biology, protein biochemistry, stem cells, bioinformatics, sequence analysis, molecular evolution, biophysics, statistics, and artificial intelligence for molecular genetics.
The program is a collaboration between Freie Universität Berlin and the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics. Successful candidates will work in an international, research-intensive environment and receive a degree from Freie Universität Berlin. The school emphasizes structured supervision through a thesis advisory committee, a diverse academic community, a flexible curriculum combining scientific courses and transferable skills, and support for learning German.
Funding is available for three years for the doctoral project. Applicants should hold an above-average master's degree or comparable qualification by September 2027, have some experience in computational or biological research, demonstrate knowledge in biology or computation together with readiness to develop the complementary area, and show very good written and spoken English. A project proposal aligned with the interests of the recruiting faculty is required.
The application deadline is 2026-12-07 at 18:00 CET. Long-listed candidates will be interviewed online in February 2027, shortlisted candidates will be invited to Berlin in March 2027, and successful candidates are expected to begin their doctorate between May and November 2027.
