About this position

The Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS) offers a prestigious, interdisciplinary PhD programme in partnership with the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) and Dresden University of Technology (TUD). This three-year doctoral fellowship is designed for candidates interested in the sustainable development and transformation of cities and regions, focusing on the dynamic interactions between ecosystems and society across multiple spatial scales. The programme is conducted entirely in English and is open to international applicants.

DLGS fellows benefit from a comprehensive curriculum that includes core courses in philosophy of science, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, spatial sustainability science, transformative leadership, and technical skills in research, writing, and publishing. Elective courses and access to TUD's Graduate Academy further enhance academic and professional development. International elements include guest lecturers, participation in international conferences, and collaboration with peers and staff from diverse backgrounds.

Fellows receive a full-time scholarship of 1,515 EUR per month for three years, with the possibility of extension, as well as funding for travel and research activities. There are no tuition fees, but a semester fee is required for enrolment, which also grants access to public transportation in Dresden. Additional support is provided for fieldwork, networking, and accommodation, with TUD’s Welcome Center assisting international students in finding housing.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree obtained within the last three years, with a grade of 'good' or better, and submit a research proposal that aligns with DLGS and IOER research areas. English language proficiency is mandatory (TOEFL or IELTS), and German proficiency at C1 level is required only for transdisciplinary research. Applications are accepted online, with a deadline of 1 September 2025 for the annual call, or on a rolling basis for open-topic proposals. Candidates should not contact potential supervisors in advance but must identify suitable supervisors in their application.

The DLGS programme provides structured research supervision, career advisory services, and a vibrant international community in Dresden, a city renowned for its cultural heritage and natural beauty. For more information and to apply, visit the DLGS website.
