About this position

PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia under the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2027) in a project titled AI-Driven Recommendation System for Therapeutic Foods Based on Body Composition.

This research combines artificial intelligence, mathematical modelling, nutrition, food sciences, and data analysis to develop a next-generation therapeutic food recommendation system for malnutrition management. The project uses secondary clinical data to identify micro- and macronutrient deficiencies, optimize individualized nutrition recommendations, and build a scalable software system that can translate nutritional data, electronic health records, and laboratory parameters into personalized meal and therapeutic food prescriptions.

The project is structured around three main research directions: AI modelling of body composition and nutrient deficiencies; optimization algorithms for scaling recommendations to community level while considering food availability and supply chain constraints; and development/testing of a software recommendation platform.

Supervision is led by Dr Yuen Kam Fung, Kevin, with associate supervision by Prof. Wong Kok Sheik and Prof. Andreas Ernst. The work is physically located in Subang Jaya, Malaysia.

Eligibility highlights include a minimum academic qualification of First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent (H1E) recognised by Monash Malaysia. The scholarship is competitive. Applicants are encouraged to contact the main supervisor before applying and share their academic background and achievements for suitability assessment.

How to apply: submit an admission application to the preferred degree program and select the scholarship type during the process. No separate scholarship application is required.

Deadline shown on the listing: 31 January 2027.
