About this position

This fully funded four-year PhD position at South East Technological University (SETU) offers an exciting opportunity to critically examine the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in reconfiguring teaching and learning in higher education. The project, titled 'Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education (AI4Ed): Theorizing the Potential of AI to Reconfigure Teaching & Learning and Increase Knowledge Democratisation,' focuses on the complex factors influencing the democratisation and decolonization of higher education, aiming to make AI more accessible and publicly legitimised for diverse stakeholders.

The research will explore the multi-layered social, ethical, and political dimensions of AI technologies in educational contexts, with a strong emphasis on the ethical challenges and opportunities AI presents for transforming traditional pedagogical practices. The project is grounded in interpretivist and critical realist theoretical traditions and will employ qualitative methodologies such as Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) and the Delphi Method, engaging lecturers, students, and other stakeholders.

Applicants should have a strong academic background, holding at least a 2:1 Honours Degree in sociology, social science, anthropology, philosophy, computer science, education, or related fields. A relevant Master's degree and postgraduate research experience are desirable. Essential knowledge includes social theoretical frameworks, ethical aspects of AI in higher education, qualitative research methods, and social science research ethics. Skills in data analysis, communication, teamwork, and time management are also valued. Non-native English speakers must meet SETU’s English language requirements.

The scholarship provides a generous annual stipend of €22,500, covers tuition fees up to €5,750 per year, and includes €3,000 per year for research costs. The position is full-time for 48 months, with a flexible start date (as soon as possible or by September 2026). The application deadline is 3 April 2026 at 4pm Irish Time.

To apply, complete the online Application Form on the SETU website (quoting reference code WD_2023_45_WSCH_2) and upload all required documents. For informal queries, contact Dr PJ Wall at [email protected]. For application process queries, contact [email protected]. SETU is an equal opportunities employer.
