Swedish Defence University scholarship

PhD opportunity in Political Science at the Swedish Defence University in Stockholm, specialising in crisis management and security, with a particular focus on Japanese security policy.

The project is linked to research on how Japan is reformulating its international role, legitimising its security policy, and developing relations with partners such as Europe, the EU, and NATO. The doctoral project sits in an established research environment with expertise in international politics, security policy, and East Asian studies.

This is a scholarship-funded PhD lasting four years full-time. The scholarship is tax-free, covers living expenses, and includes insurance plus funds for literature and research-related costs. The approximate amount is SEK 27,500 per month.

Eligibility highlights: completed master’s degree or equivalent; at least 240 ECTS credits with 60 ECTS at advanced level; at least 30 ECTS at postgraduate level in Political Science focused on crisis management or security (or equivalent); an independent thesis of at least 15 ECTS at postgraduate level; an additional 90 ECTS in relevant subjects; English 6 or equivalent; and for some applicants TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge ESOL evidence. Strong prior academic work, a feasible research plan, knowledge of Japanese foreign and security policy, and Japanese language skills are emphasized in selection.
