About this position

Queen’s University Belfast is offering a PhD project in Media Studies examining screen industries, misleading video, AI-generated content and public trust during episodes of public disorder in Northern Ireland.

Focusing on anti-immigrant disorder in Belfast and Ballymena, the research will investigate how video is edited, shared and interpreted by different audiences. It will explore what makes footage credible, how newsrooms respond to disputed clips, and what evidence is needed to determine whether video has been generated or altered using artificial intelligence.

The doctoral researcher will analyse online video and broadcast coverage and conduct interviews with screen-media practitioners, viewers and people from affected communities. The project is designed to connect academic research with practical media practice, producing a guide to video verification and responsible production for broadcasters and content creators, as well as training recommendations and a policy briefing.

The PhD will be supervised by Dr Jasbeer Musthafa Mamalipurath within the research environment of Queen’s University Belfast, with a focus on misinformation, disinformation, media interpretation and public trust during community tension.
