About this position

The Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS) offers an interdisciplinary PhD programme focused on urban and regional development, jointly run by the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) and Dresden University of Technology (TUD). The programme is designed for candidates interested in the sustainable transformation of cities and regions, addressing the global human-ecological crisis through research that spans natural, social, and engineering sciences.

DLGS provides a structured curriculum with compulsory and elective courses covering philosophy of science, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, spatial sustainability science, transformative leadership, and technical skills in research, writing, and publishing. Fellows benefit from scientific support via Supervisory Board meetings, tailored guidance, and opportunities for fieldwork and networking at national and international conferences. International guest lecturers and collaborations with partners in Germany and abroad enrich the academic experience.

All teaching is conducted in English, and international students are supported with German language courses. The programme duration is three years (six semesters), with a start date of 1 March 2026 for annual call applicants or rolling admission for open-topic applications. DLGS fellows receive a full-time scholarship of 1,515 EUR per month, plus travel and research activity expenses. There are no tuition fees, but a semester fee is required for enrolment, which includes access to public transportation.

Applicants must have earned a Master’s degree within the last three years, with a grade of 'good' or better. A research proposal must align with DLGS and IOER research areas and address the annual topic (for current call). English proficiency is required (TOEFL: 600 paper/250 computer/100 internet; IELTS: 7 or better), and applicants for transdisciplinary research must demonstrate German proficiency at C1 level. Applications are submitted online, and candidates should not contact potential supervisors in advance.

Dresden University of Technology is one of Germany’s top-ranked universities, offering a vibrant academic environment and extensive support for international students, including help with accommodation, registration, and cultural preparation. The city of Dresden provides a rich cultural scene and access to beautiful natural landscapes, making it an attractive destination for researchers and students.

For more information about current fellows and application procedures, visit the DLGS website. The application deadline for the annual call is 1 September 2025, with rolling deadlines for open-topic applications.
