About this position
This Doctor of Philosophy project at the University of Southampton explores cryogenic memristors as ultra-low-power adaptive calibration and memory elements for quantum-computing control electronics.
The research addresses the quantum–classical interface, where control, calibration and readout electronics become increasingly difficult to scale as qubit numbers grow. Qubit drift causes device characteristics to change over time, creating a need for continuous recalibration. The project will investigate whether memristors operating at cryogenic temperatures can learn and compensate for this drift automatically, supporting more stable, scalable and energy-efficient quantum systems.
The work spans cryogenic memristor materials, device physics, thin-film engineering, nanofabrication, cryogenic electronics and neuromorphic control. Expected research outcomes include new cryogenic memristor materials, device and behavioural models, adaptive calibration circuits, and proof-of-concept neuromorphic architectures for future quantum technologies.
During the first year, the researcher will develop and optimise thin-film materials for cryogenic operation, working with engineers from Von Ardenne GmbH through collaboration with the MEMNICS Laboratory. The second year will focus on fabricating and characterising cryogenic memristor chips, including their switching behaviour, retention, endurance, multilevel operation and low-temperature stability. The researcher will also establish cryogenic electrical-testing protocols and develop device-physics and behavioural models.
In the third year, the project will involve designing, building and experimentally evaluating adaptive calibration circuits and neuromorphic control architectures. Demonstrator systems will assess how cryogenic memristors can compensate for qubit drift and reduce power consumption in future quantum-computing systems. The project provides multidisciplinary training across materials engineering, device development, cryogenic measurement, circuit design, neuromorphic engineering and quantum technologies.
The opportunity is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton and includes industrial collaboration with Von Ardenne GmbH.
