About this position
PhD scholarship opportunities are available for two candidates to join the Monash Bioethics Centre at Monash University’s Clayton campus in Melbourne.
The project sits within an ARC-funded Future Fellowship project on addressing cultural diversity in healthcare through global bioethics, led by Dr Ehsan Shamsi Gooshki. The research examines how bioethics engages with cultural diversity across Australian and global healthcare contexts, combining qualitative, quantitative and analytical approaches.
Successful candidates will become part of an established research program and contribute to a broader team project while developing their own doctoral work. The project is open in direction, allowing each PhD to be shaped around the candidate’s interests and expertise. Possible approaches include empirical qualitative work, quantitative surveys, literature-based research, conceptual and normative analysis, or mixed methods.
Students will be based in the Monash Bioethics Centre, established in 1980 as Australia’s first research centre devoted to bioethics. The Centre is described as a world-leading hub for bioethics research and education, with interdisciplinary work spanning healthcare ethics, biomedical science, and major ethical, social and policy questions. It sits within the School of Philosophical, Historical and Indigenous Studies in the Faculty of Arts, giving candidates access to a broad humanities and social science environment.
The position offers involvement in a strong research culture, with opportunities to join an international network of researchers and bioethics institutions, and to contribute to publications, policy engagement, international collaborations and future research initiatives.
