Monash University PhD Scholarship

The Centre for Health Economics at Monash University, located at the Caulfield campus in Melbourne, Australia, is offering a prestigious PhD scholarship in Global Health Economics. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with a strong quantitative background and a passion for applied economics, health economics, and climate economics. The successful applicant will join a vibrant research community within Monash Business School, engaging in impactful international research across themes such as global and environmental health economics, health financing, and economic modelling of health policies and technologies.

Potential research areas include aid effectiveness and locally led development, health care financing and universal health coverage, economics of developing and procuring medicines and health technologies for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), health technology assessment and priority-setting, climate change and environmental health economics, and expanding access to digital health. The candidate will receive comprehensive training in applied microeconometrics, health economics, environmental economics, discrete choice experiments, administrative data analysis, modelling and simulation, and policy evaluation.

Supervision will be provided by Associate Professor Rohan Sweeney and Dr. Maame Esi Woode, along with other researchers at the Centre for Health Economics. Collaboration opportunities with policy partners and researchers in development, health, and environmental economics are available. The Integrated PhD Program begins with one year of advanced coursework and research training, including a minor thesis packaged into a Master of Commerce degree. Upon meeting requirements, students progress to the PhD research stage, which typically takes three and a half years to complete. Additional benefits include domestic and international research visits, conference travel, engagement with policy stakeholders, a dedicated workspace, and a personal laptop.

Applicants must have completed an Honours degree, a four-year bachelor’s degree, or a master’s degree with top marks and a research component in economics, econometrics, public policy, data science, statistics, psychology, public health, or another relevant quantitative discipline. Experience with statistical software such as Stata or R is advantageous. English language requirements apply as per Monash Business School guidelines. The scholarship covers full tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend of AU$37,000 per annum, with up to AU$47,000 per annum for outstanding students. Additional financial support may be available through research and teaching assistance work.
