About this position
DTU Construct at the Technical University of Denmark is advertising a fully funded PhD scholarship in integration of high-temperature heat pumps in industrial processes. The project sits in the Thermal Energy Section of the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering and is part of HeatMinds, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network funded by Horizon Europe.
The research focus is on helping industry decide how to electrify heat supply by combining thermodynamics, optimization, machine learning, and energy-system modelling. The goal is to create tools that can quickly and reliably assess the business case for industrial high-temperature heat pumps, from an initial viability check to integration with industrial processes and flexible operation.
The project aims to develop models that rapidly estimate performance and break-even points for specific sites, extend methods for co-optimizing heat recovery, electrification, and flexibility, and validate the methods through industrial secondments and use cases with partners. The work also includes publishing in international journals, conference presentations, and participation in HeatMinds training, summer schools, and outreach.
Eligibility highlights include a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent, no prior doctoral degree, and compliance with MSCA mobility rules: applicants must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment. Strong preparation in engineering thermodynamics, heat transfer, and energy technologies is expected, together with modelling and numerical simulation experience and programming skills in Python, Matlab, Modelica, or similar tools. Excellent English is required.
The position is based in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark, and the appointment is for 3 years. Salary follows the Marie S. Curie compensation scheme, including a base salary of DKK 30,264.08, a PhD supplement of DKK 1,580.90, pension contributions of 18.07%, and possible family allowance. The application deadline is 2026-11-24.
To apply, candidates must submit the online application as one PDF in English, including a cover letter, CV, transcripts, BSc/MSc diploma, thesis or publications if available, and a short critical literature review on integration of high-temperature heat in industrial processes.
