About this position
Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy), is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship in multiscale operando characterization of operating zinc-based batteries. The project is part of the INCEPTION Doctoral Network under Horizon Europe – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and is hosted in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The PhD project focuses on developing and applying operando methods to study rechargeable zinc-air batteries. The work combines diffraction and tomography using both in-house facilities and synchrotron X-ray sources. The goal is to capture multiscale information on transformation dynamics in zinc-air electrodes, quantify redistribution of phases during operation, investigate reaction mechanisms, and use the findings to help optimize battery performance.
Main tasks include electrochemical characterization of zinc-air battery cells, development of specialized in situ cells for operando diffraction and imaging, powder diffraction-based materials characterization, imaging-based morphological analysis, synchrotron X-ray diffraction and imaging on operating batteries, automated Rietveld refinement of large datasets, computed tomography analysis, and dissemination of research results. The position also includes collaboration with project partners and an external research stay at a partner university.
DTU Energy is a strong research environment for functional materials and sustainable energy technologies, with expertise spanning batteries, electrochemistry, structural analyses, and multi-physics modelling. The successful candidate will join an international network designed to provide interdisciplinary, intersectoral, and international training.
Applicants should hold a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in Engineering or Physics. Strong experience in X-ray diffraction, computed tomography, electrochemical characterization, crystal structure analysis, and Rietveld refinement is expected, along with the ability to work independently, communicate scientifically in English, and collaborate effectively in a team. English language certification may be required unless exempt.
The appointment is for 3 years with a planned start date of 1 October 2026. The application deadline is 24 August 2026 at 23:59 Danish time. Applicants must also comply with the MSCA mobility rule, meaning they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before recruitment.
