About this position
BI Norwegian Business School is advertising a PhD scholarship in Outsider Innovation as Foresight Infrastructure within the REGULAIRE Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network. The position is based in Oslo, Norway and sits across the Department of Communication and Culture and the Department of Law and Governance, with affiliation to BI’s Nordic Centre for Internet and Society (NCIS).
The project explores how open-source communities, civic technologists, small and medium-sized enterprises, and marginalised user groups generate early signals about emerging technological risks and opportunities before regulators do. Research themes include regulatory foresight, transformative technologies, AI, quantum computing, neurotechnology, digital governance, and the translation of outsider knowledge into regulatory review.
Possible methods include case studies, interviews, document analysis, and network analysis. The successful candidate will develop an independent PhD project within this theme and contribute to an interdisciplinary network with training, summer schools, and a planned intersectoral secondment.
Funding includes a four-year full-time appointment, a current gross salary of NOK 623,200 per year, and 36 funded research months through REGULAIRE. The post also includes teaching or career-promoting duties and may include mobility/family allowances under MSCA rules.
Eligibility highlights: a relevant two-year master’s degree (or equivalent), thesis work, GPA of B or higher, excellent English, and MSCA mobility/doctoral eligibility conditions. BI normally accepts certain English-language backgrounds, while other applicants may need IELTS or TOEFL results or a waiver application.
Deadline: 15 November 2026 at 23:59 CET. Apply via BI’s electronic recruitment system and upload the required documents before the deadline.
