About this position

KU Leuven is inviting applications for a PhD project in semantic-aware joint communication and sensing in distributed non-terrestrial networks. The researcher will join WaveCoRE in the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) in Leuven, Belgium.

The project investigates how aerial sensing networks can exchange meaningful information while reducing energy and bandwidth consumption. The work will explore semantic communication for efficient coordination among aerial nodes, PHY–MAC cross-layer design for aerial systems, and the joint integration of sensing, communication, and computation in distributed aerial environments.

The research sits at the intersection of wireless communications, signal processing, networking, distributed systems, and intelligent aerial-network coordination. It offers an opportunity to develop methods for communication and sensing in non-terrestrial networks, with potential use of AI-based signal processing and machine learning.

The successful researcher will work within KU Leuven’s electrical engineering research environment and contribute to WaveCoRE’s research on wireless communication and sensing in the sky.
