About this position
Bangor University is offering a fully funded three-year PhD studentship in Joint Communications and Sensing within the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre, part of the School of Computer Science and Engineering.
The project sits within an internationally recognised research centre with strengths in digital signal processing, telecommunications, optical communications, and next-generation network technologies. The studentship is supported by three major research projects, including two funded by EPSRC and one through the Flintshire & Wrexham Investment Zone Research and Innovation Programme. Students will benefit from advanced research facilities, industry collaborations, and expertise aligned with innovation in 5G, 6G and future communications systems.
The award provides a UKRI stipend of £21,805 per year (2026/27 rate) plus a full tuition fee waiver. The appointment is initially for three years, with a possible extension depending on future funding. Candidates are expected to start as soon as possible.
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant physical science, engineering, or technology discipline. Useful background includes optical, wireless or optical wireless communications, joint communications and sensing, data networks, digital or analogue signal processing, mobile communications, high-speed digital circuit design, and computer programming.
The role involves theoretical and/or experimental research, publishing findings in journals and conferences, presenting at workshops and meetings, maintaining laboratory equipment, assisting with research proposals, supporting undergraduate project activities, and taking part in training and professional development. Strong mathematical, analytical and experimental skills are important, alongside the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Previous research experience, publications, and knowledge of 5G/6G technologies are desirable.
For informal enquiries, contact Professor Jianming Tang at [email protected]. Non-UK/EU nationals may require an ATAS certificate. The closing date is 24 November 2026. Applications should be submitted through Bangor University’s online application page.
