About this position

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship in Enzyme Stability Modelling and Prediction within the Department of Chemical Engineering. This position is embedded in the Bioprocess Science and Engineering (BSE) group, which is part of the PROSYS research center at DTU Chemical Engineering. The group is internationally recognized for its innovative research in enzyme kinetics and stability under industrial process conditions, utilizing advanced laboratory equipment and modelling approaches to optimize biocatalysis for sustainable chemical synthesis.

This PhD project is part of the Horizon Europe Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) doctoral network ELEGANCE, focusing on machine learning for integrated multi-parametric enzyme and bioprocess design. The research will involve the expression, characterization, and application of enzymes sourced from the University of Turin and other partner laboratories. You will test enzyme stability in specialized gas-liquid interface apparatus and other reactors, collect and analyze experimental data, and develop predictive models describing the effects of process conditions on enzyme stability. The project includes refining these models for use in standard stirred tank reactors and developing algorithms for enzyme stability testing.

As a PhD student, you will combine enzyme and process engineering with computational modelling, participate in training events, workshops, and secondments within the MSCA ELEGANCE network, and collaborate with local, national, and international partners. You will be expected to report your research in peer-reviewed publications and at international conferences, engage in public outreach, and contribute to teaching and supervision of MSc and BSc students.

DTU offers a dynamic and inclusive international research environment, with a strong commitment to academic excellence and collegial respect. The department is one of the largest in Europe, with extensive collaborations with industry and start-ups. DTU supports career development and provides resources for international researchers relocating to Denmark, including monthly seminars on practical matters.

Funding and Employment Terms: The position is funded by the Horizon Europe MSCA program. The appointment is for three years, starting 1 June 2026 (or as agreed). The salary follows the Marie S. Curie compensation scheme, with a minimum base salary of DKK 29,701.83 per month plus a PhD supplement of DKK 1,551.00, pension contributions (18.07%), and possible family allowance.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in biotechnology, (bio)chemical engineering, or a related field. Excellent English proficiency, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams are required. Interest in advanced computational methods is preferred but not mandatory. You may apply before completing your master's degree but must have it before starting the position.

Application Process: Submit your complete online application by 21 January 2026. Applications must include a cover letter, CV, grade transcripts, and BSc/MSc diploma (with grading scale description) in a single PDF file. Use the DTU online application portal and ensure all materials are in English. Late applications will not be considered.

For further information, contact Professor John Woodley at [email protected] or visit the ELEGANCE network website and DTU Chemical Engineering for more details.

DTU is committed to diversity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates regardless of age, gender, disability, race, religion, or ethnic background.
