About this position
DTU BRiGHT (Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute for the Green Transition) at the Technical University of Denmark is advertising a PhD scholarship in fermentation-based production of biochemicals in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.
The project focuses on sustainable biomanufacturing and low-carbon production routes for high-volume chemicals from CO₂-derived feedstocks and mixed C1-derived substrates. The research spans the full innovation pipeline, including metabolic tools and design, strain engineering, fermentation, downstream processing, multi-omics, techno-economic validation, and business development.
The PhD student will work on optimizing fermentation conditions under anaerobic and aerobic processes, media optimization, proteomics and transcriptomics analysis, downstream purification development, and defining titer/rate/yield targets for economically relevant processes. The work is coordinated by Professor Alex Toftgaard Nielsen.
Applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent. A strong background in fermentation and downstream processes is preferred, especially hands-on experience with anaerobic bacteria (e.g., Clostridium spp.) and aerobic organisms (e.g., S. cerevisiae), plus anaerobic cultivation methods. Process modelling and basic programming are advantageous. Strong English skills are required, and the role includes teaching and supervision of BSc and MSc student projects.
This is a 3-year full-time PhD scholarship subject to academic approval and enrolment in a DTU PhD programme. The application deadline is 3 November 2026. Apply online and submit one PDF containing a cover letter, CV, and transcripts plus degree documentation.
