About this position

The Zema Energy Studies Scholarship at Monash University offers a prestigious opportunity for domestic students to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Master of Engineering Science (Research) in the fields of Engineering, Information Technology, Business, and Economics. This 3.5-year PhD or 2-year master's program is based at the Clayton and Caulfield campuses and is designed to develop Australia’s future energy leaders through advanced multidisciplinary research and industry engagement.

Monash Engineering is renowned globally for its pioneering research in STEM fields, consistently ranking highly in international lists. The Zema Scholarship, launched in partnership with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), aims to create a cohort of energy professionals with deep expertise across engineering, IT, and business disciplines. Scholars will work collaboratively with supervisors from multiple faculties and engage directly with the energy sector, including the opportunity for a paid internship with AEMO.

Research projects under the Zema Scholarship span a wide range of energy-related topics, including small-signal stability in inverter-dominated grids, electricity pricing mechanisms, forecasting indoor air quality, the role of storage and electric vehicles in the energy market, and power system stability analysis using machine learning. The program is designed to empower students to build on their passion, gain industry exposure, and contribute meaningfully to the energy community.

Successful applicants will receive a generous tax-free stipend of $53,608 per annum (2026 rate), with additional opportunities for paid internships. The scholarship supports a diverse workforce and encourages applicants from various backgrounds.

Eligibility is restricted to Australian citizens or Permanent Residents who meet Monash University’s PhD admission criteria and demonstrate excellent research capability. Applicants are encouraged to review the detailed requirements on the Monash Graduate Research website.

To apply, candidates should first confirm their eligibility, contact a potential supervisor at Monash to discuss their research interests, and submit an expression of interest with their faculty. Upon receiving an invitation, applicants can complete the online application via the provided portal. The deadline for full applications is 31 May 2026, 11:59pm AEST.
