About this position
PhD Studentship in Comparative Fisheries Management in the Arctic and Antarctic in a Changing Climate at the University of East Anglia.
This interdisciplinary PhD project examines how rapid climate change is reshaping polar marine ecosystems and the implications for sustainable fisheries management in both the Arctic and Antarctic. Working primarily at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), with time also spent at Cefas and UEA, the student will investigate the effects of changing ocean conditions on the distribution, abundance, productivity, and vulnerability of key commercial fish species.
The project combines ecological modelling, climate projections, fisheries and environmental datasets, and policy analysis. Potential case-study species include commercially important fish such as Atlantic mackerel, cod, and toothfish. The research will compare management approaches across the two polar regions, assessing governance frameworks, management measures, and policy processes to identify common challenges, contrasting responses, and opportunities for more climate-resilient fisheries management.
Training will be strongly interdisciplinary, covering ecological modelling, fisheries science, risk assessment, and policy analysis. The successful candidate will benefit from collaboration between BAS, Cefas, and UEA, with opportunities to engage with international scientific and policy communities, attend conferences, and develop both technical and transferable skills such as data analysis, paper writing, stakeholder engagement, and media training.
Eligibility and candidate profile: Applicants should have a background in marine science, ecology, fisheries science, environmental science, or a related discipline. Strong numerical, analytical, and communication skills are desirable, and an interest in marine ecosystems, fisheries, climate change, and policy will be an advantage.
Funding: ARIES studentships are fully funded for eligible UKRI candidates, covering fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants, with the difference between home and international fees waived by the registering university, though relocation and UK living-related costs are not covered.
Application deadline: 16 December 2026. Apply via the UEA postgraduate research application portal and complete the required ARIES Equality and Diversity Form after submitting your project application.
