About this position
University of Exeter PhD Studentship in Decoding the rules of human gene interaction networks using combinatorial functional genomics.
This funded doctoral project sits at the interface of functional genomics, molecular genetics, imaging, bioinformatics, statistics and data science. It addresses a major challenge in human genetics: understanding how combinations of genes interact to shape cellular phenotypes and disease processes, rather than treating genes as acting independently.
The project builds on a newly developed multiplexed Variable Dose Analysis (mVDA) platform, designed to perturb multiple genes across a range of knockdown efficiencies. The student will adapt and optimise mVDA for human cells, then integrate it with either live-cell microscopy or single-cell sequencing depending on their interests and strengths. A third stage will apply the platform to a proof-of-concept study of NF1-related genetic interactions, with potential relevance to tumour biology and combination therapy discovery.
The studentship offers a highly interdisciplinary and flexible training environment. Depending on background and interests, the successful applicant may emphasise experimental technology development, computational methods, network analysis, or biological application. Training includes genetic perturbation methods, advanced microscopy, single-cell genomics, computational analysis, statistical modelling and reproducible research practices, with a strong emphasis on FAIR data stewardship and research integrity.
The project is hosted within the Functional Genomics Screening Laboratory and the Exeter Living Systems Institute, with access to high-throughput screening, live-cell imaging, single-cell sequencing and computational resources. The wider environment supports collaboration across disciplines and connection to national functional genomics networks.
This is a funded PhD opportunity supported by the EPSRC Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The funding information states that the studentship provides fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.
Application deadline: 08 Dec 2026. Applications should be submitted via the University of Exeter funding page using the provided link.
