About this position
Manchester Metropolitan University is offering a funded PhD studentship within the Faculty of Business and Law titled From Fan to Father: Exploring the Role of Football Fan Communities in Supporting New Fatherhood.
The project examines how football fan communities may support men during the transition to first-time fatherhood, especially where traditional parenting support is often oriented towards mothers. Using qualitative research methods, the study will explore three connected themes: identity transformation, social support, and masculinity and belonging.
Research questions include how fathers negotiate identities as both fans and parents, what forms of emotional, informational, and practical support fan communities provide, and how these communities shape or challenge ideas of masculinity and fatherhood. The project is intended to generate academic insight as well as practical impact for sports clubs and governing bodies.
Funding is available for home and international applicants. Home and international tuition fees are covered for the full 3-year award, and the student will receive a standard stipend at the UKRI rate, currently £21,805 for 2026/27.
Eligibility typically includes an undergraduate degree with first-class or upper-second-class honours (or equivalent), or a relevant Masters degree in sport management, marketing, sociology, or a related field. Applicants should also show interest in parenthood, sport, and fandom.
Applicants should submit the online PhD in Marketing application, complete the Doctoral Project Applicant Form, and provide a CV and covering letter. The advert notes that no research proposal is required at the portal stage. For questions, contact the proposed Principal Supervisor, Dr. Leah Gillooly, at [email protected].
Application deadline: 2 February 2027. Expected start date: October 2027.
