About this position
This PhD studentship at Swansea University sits within the ESRC Welsh Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS) pathway in Health, Wellbeing and Data Science. The project area brings together observational, descriptive, and trials-based methods with large population-scale datasets to tackle pressing health and social challenges. Research in this area aims to inform evidence-based policy and support people to make healthier lifestyle choices or to live better with illness and disability.
Projects may examine the built and social environment and how these shape multiple health and social outcomes. Example topics include characterising housing or school travel environments and assessing impacts on injuries, mental health, and educational outcomes; or studying changing ageing and family-size demographics in relation to the epidemiology of chronic health conditions and the emerging care gap. The pathway is methodologically broad and may involve observational analysis, computational approaches, and population-level modelling.
The studentship is funded by the ESRC and covers tuition fees plus an annual tax-free living stipend at the UKRI minimum rate. The stated stipend for 2026/27 is £21,805. This is a doctoral opportunity for researchers who can work across social science, health data, and quantitative or mixed-methods research.
If your proposal requires access to data from the SAIL Databank, you must register your proposed project with the SAIL Scoping team before you submit your application. Applications should be made via the Swansea University scholarship page and submitted by the advertised deadline.

What's required
Applicants should be suitably qualified doctoral researchers with interest or experience in applying mixed methods, observational, descriptive, trials-based, computational, or population-level modelling approaches to complex social science and health data problems. Experience working with administrative and linked health data is advantageous, and projects using SAIL Databank data must be registered with the SAIL Scoping team before application.
How to apply
Review the studentship details and prepare a proposed project aligned with the Health, Wellbeing and Data Science pathway. If your project requires SAIL Databank data, register it with the SAIL Scoping team before submitting your application. Submit the application through the Swansea University application link by the deadline.
