About this position
The University of East Anglia’s School of Biological Sciences is offering a funded, full-time PhD studentship in Norwich, United Kingdom, focused on alternative splicing regulation by small nuclear RNA (snRNA) modifications.
Based in Dr Alper Akay’s RNA (epi)genetics laboratory, the project will investigate how spliceosomal snRNA modifications regulate RNA splicing and gene-specific splice-site choice. Research will use the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and human cells to examine effects on transcript isoform expression.
The student will receive training in molecular biology, genetics, and RNA sequencing analysis while working in collaboration with the groups of Dr Wilfried Haerty and Dr James Smith. The research environment includes multidisciplinary collaboration, laboratory and external mentorship, conferences, seminars, career-development support, and interaction with national and international RNA-modification laboratories.
The studentship is available to UK applicants and provides home tuition fees plus an annual stipend of £21,805 for three years, subject to any agreed inflationary uplift for 2027/28. Applicants should normally have at least a 2:1 degree in biological sciences, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a relevant discipline. The application deadline is 24 February 2027, with a start date of 1 October 2027.
