About this position
The University of Oxford is offering a 3.5-year DPhil studentship in Control and Engineering Biology on the project “Learning and controlling cellular dynamics.” The research sits at the intersection of engineering, biology, control theory and machine learning.
Potential directions include developing mathematical and computational models of cellular behaviour, designing feedback-control strategies, and building experimental tools using microfluidics, automated microscopy and light-controlled gene expression. Applications include understanding bacterial physiology and improving the reliability and productivity of biological manufacturing. The balance of experimental, computational and theoretical work will be developed with the successful candidate.
The studentship is open primarily to UK students and covers Home-level course fees plus a tax-free maintenance stipend of approximately £21,805 per year for the first year, with at least this amount provided for the remaining two and a half years. Some flexibility may be available for international students, who should contact the supervisor before applying.
Applicants should hold a first-class or strong upper-second-class honours degree, or equivalent, in Engineering, Physics, Biology or a related field. A clear interest in engineering or understanding biological systems, willingness to work across disciplines, and excellent written and spoken English are required. Programming, data analysis, mathematical modelling, control theory, machine learning, molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology, bioprocess engineering, microscopy, microfluidics, instrumentation and experimental automation are desirable but not essential.
Applications must be submitted through the Oxford graduate application system by noon on 2 December 2026, quoting reference 27ENGCO_JL. The expected start date is October 2027. Informal enquiries may be directed to Professor Jean-Baptiste Lugagne.

What's required
Applicants should have a first-class or strong upper-second-class honours undergraduate degree, or equivalent, in Engineering, Physics, Biology, or a relevant discipline. Candidates should demonstrate a clear interest in understanding or engineering biological systems, motivation to learn beyond their existing discipline, and excellent written and spoken English communication skills. Desirable but non-essential experience includes programming, data analysis, mathematical modelling, control theory, machine learning, molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology, bioprocess engineering, microscopy, microfluidics, instrumentation, or experimental automation. Applicants must also meet the University of Oxford graduate admissions criteria.
How to apply
Submit a University of Oxford graduate application form for the relevant DPhil course and quote reference 27ENGCO_JL in the application and correspondence. Informal enquiries should be sent to Professor Jean-Baptiste Lugagne at [email protected]. Applications are due by noon on 2 December 2026.
