About this position
The University of East Anglia in Norwich, United Kingdom, is offering a full-time PhD studentship on the development of Lossy Mode Resonance (LMR) optical fibre sensors for energy applications. The project is supervised by Dr Keith M. Alcock and focuses on highly sensitive optical sensing for smarter, safer, and more efficient energy systems.
Research will investigate how fibre geometry, thin-film composition, and fabrication methods affect LMR sensor performance in energy environments. Topics include metal oxide, conducting polymer, and hybrid coatings; optical, chemical, and thermal stability; spin- and dip-assisted layer-by-layer fabrication; and miniaturisation of sensors for integration into battery packs and solar panels. Applications may include monitoring temperature, chemical species, humidity, and other parameters relevant to energy storage and generation.
The doctoral researcher will join an international team at the University of East Anglia and the Institute of Carbochemistry in Spain, with the potential for a research stay at the Spanish institute. Training in advanced analytical and experimental techniques will support the development of reproducible, scalable optical fibre sensor technologies.
Applicants should normally have at least a 2:1 degree in Materials Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline. The project is full-time and starts on 1 October 2027. Funding is available to UK applicants for three years and includes home tuition fees and an annual stipend currently set at £21,805, subject to an inflationary uplift.
The application deadline is 24 February 2027. Applications should be submitted through the jobs.ac.uk vacancy page.
