About this position
PhD studentship at the University of Birmingham in an Integrated Intelligent Safe Environment (IISE) for the nuclear industry.
This project addresses a major challenge in nuclear operations: enabling robots, autonomous systems, and human operators to work together safely within the same safety envelope. The research aims to develop technologies, methodologies, and assurance frameworks that support human-robot coexistence, collaboration, and regulatory compliance in complex and dynamic nuclear environments.
The advertised research focus is a digital twin enabled approach to human-robot and sensor collaboration. The successful candidate will work on creating and managing a detailed digital twin that mirrors a real nuclear environment and provides real-time insight into atmospheric conditions, temperature, robot and human position/orientation, collision risks, and sensor health. The digital twin should support route analysis, traffic pattern prediction, rehearsal of tasks before human entry, and live RAG-style status updates for sensors and maintenance needs.
The studentship is especially relevant to candidates with interests in robotics, AI, autonomous systems, digital twins, sensing, safety assurance, and human-robot interaction in hazardous or regulated settings. The position is open to both UK fee payers and international students, and the funding covers full tuition fees plus a stipend for living costs.
Applicants are expected to hold a first degree at 1st class level or equivalent in Robotics and AI or a closely related subject. An MSc in robotics or a related area is highly desirable. To apply, email Dr Steve Davis at [email protected] with a CV and a brief statement describing how the project fits your background and experience. The deadline is 15 November 2026.
