About this position
This PhD studentship sits within Imperial College London’s Brahmal Institute and its October 2027 Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Aviation (DPSA). The programme is framed around a system-wide sustainability theme, bringing together students working across aviation’s interconnected stakeholders, including airports, airlines, air traffic management, aircraft and passengers.
The project focuses on market-based solutions for sustainable aviation fuels. Using multi-agent-based modelling, the student will investigate how airlines and fuel producers respond to policy instruments such as carbon pricing, mandates and subsidies, and how these combinations influence SAF investment, adoption and emissions reduction across the aviation system to 2050.
The research is intended to generate insights into stakeholder interactions, fuel supply constraints and policy incentives, with the goal of informing effective and economically viable decarbonisation strategies. The studentship is supervised by Dr Gbemi Oluleye and Professor Laura Mainini, and offers access to a collaborative doctoral environment with shared learning, specialist training, networking and outreach within the DPSA cohort.
