[Fees and a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.] PhD studentship at the University of Exeter on physics-informed AI and experimental modelling of ocean mixing , focusing on how fracture zones connect deep-ocean mixing, tracer transport, abyssal upwelling, and large-scale ocean ventilation. The project addresses a major climate-science challenge: how small-scale turbulent mixing in the deep ocean shapes basin-scale overturning circulation and the transport of heat, carbon, and nutrients. It ...

About this position

[Fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.]

This PhD studentship at the University of Exeter focuses on the mathematical and numerical foundations of the next generation of ocean-wave forecasting models. The project is motivated by the need for accurate, timely wave predictions to improve safety for shipping, coastal communities, offshore operations, and marine infrastructure such as offshore wind farms and wave-energy converter arrays.

The research aims to move beyond existing weakly nonlinear operational models, such as ECMWF’s ECWAM and NOAA’s WAVEWATCH III, and explore a fully nonlinear regime. A central objective is to develop a fully nonlinear kinetic equation using a multi-symplectic formulation. This would serve as a backbone for improved ocean-wave forecasting algorithms capable of capturing more complex wave dynamics.

A second major aim is to design new multi-symplectic numerical methods for 2+1 Hamiltonian wave equations. These structure-preserving algorithms in both space and time will support both forecasting applications and fundamental studies of nonlinear wave interactions, including how extreme surface waves emerge and how complexity develops in nonlinear water-wave systems.

This is a mathematically intensive project with strong links to applied physics and ocean modelling. It will be of interest to candidates with backgrounds in mathematics, physics, numerical analysis, scientific computing, or related quantitative fields.

Funding is provided by the EPSRC and includes fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7. The application deadline is 8 December 2026. Applicants should apply through the University of Exeter funding page.
