About this position
PhD Studentship: Running on Empty: Metabolic Ageing in Blood Stem Cells at the University of East Anglia.
This project explores a fundamental question in ageing biology: why blood stem cells lose metabolic fitness with age, and whether restoring nutrient supply can reverse stem-cell decline. The research focuses on glutamine, a nutrient shown to be essential for healthy blood stem cell function, and investigates why its availability falters in older cells and whether correcting this deficit can improve blood stem cell activity and blood output.
You will work in the Rushworth Lab at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, in collaboration with expert partners at the Earlham Institute and the wider Norwich Research Park. The project sits at the intersection of ageing biology, stem cell biology, metabolism, and translational biosciences, with potential relevance to immune decline and age-related blood disorders.
The studentship provides extensive hands-on training in a highly marketable toolkit, including primary cell isolation, in-vivo and in-vitro modelling, metabolomics, stable isotope tracing, flow cytometry (FACS), LC-MS-based metabolite analysis, qPCR, western blotting, ELISA, and metabolic flux analysis. This makes the project a strong fit for students interested in academic, clinical, or industry research careers.
Funding is available through a 4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD studentship. The award includes payment of tuition fees, a stipend for living costs at the 2026/27 rate of £21,805, and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.
Eligibility includes at least a UK-equivalent Bachelor’s degree with Honours at 2:1 level and the required English language standard (IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component for Faculty of Science equivalent).
The project is full-time with a start date of 1 October 2027. Applications close on 30 November 2026. Interested candidates should apply via the online application link and ensure they provide all required academic and language evidence.
