About this position
PhD studentship at the University of Birmingham exploring the hidden immune system of fungi and the role of NLR genes.
The project asks how fungal NLRs contribute to immune-like responses in fungi, an area that is much less understood than NLR function in plants and animals. The work will use the genetically tractable wheat pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici, which has a relatively small set of NLR genes and offers a powerful model for studying fungal-bacterial interactions, self-incompatibility, and host plant interactions.
Students will receive training in a broad range of modern bioscience techniques, including molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics, protein biochemistry, gene knockout generation, high-throughput screening of microbial collections, RNAseq transcriptome profiling, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and proximity labelling approaches such as TurboID.
This is a PhD studentship within the Midlands Integrated Biosciences Training Partnership, funded by BBSRC and delivered in partnership with the University of Warwick, Aston University, Harper Adams University, Coventry University, and the University of Leicester alongside the University of Birmingham.
Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Graeme Kettles at [email protected]. The application deadline is 23 November 2026.

What's required
Applicants should be interested in molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics, and protein biochemistry. The project involves generating fungal gene knockout strains, performing high-throughput screens, RNAseq analysis, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and proximity labelling, so relevant research skills or willingness to be trained in these areas would be beneficial. No specific degree classification, language test, or GPA requirement is stated in the advert.
How to apply
Apply through the University of Birmingham application link provided in the advert. Review the Midlands Integrated Biosciences Training Partnership pages for further details before submitting. For informal enquiries, contact Dr Graeme Kettles by email.
