About this position

[PhD studentship funded by BBSRC through the Midlands Integrated Biosciences Training Partnership, in partnership with the University of Warwick, University of Birmingham, Aston University, Harper Adams University, Coventry University, and the University of Leicester.]

PhD studentship at the University of Birmingham on understanding and modulating protein-protein interactions (PPIs) involving intrinsically disordered regions. The project is designed to develop new approaches for targeting challenging β-strand-mediated PPIs using peptidomimetics and backbone amide modifications.

The research will explore how N-alkylation and amide-to-thioamide substitution can be used to bias conformational ensembles toward more productive binding-competent states, while also improving target-binding kinetics. The student will investigate molecular determinants of binding using high-resolution structural and biophysical techniques, including fluorescence anisotropy, surface plasmon resonance, isothermal titration calorimetry, and advanced 2D NMR. Peptidomimetics will be synthesised using automated solid-phase peptide synthesis and analysed in the presence and absence of the target protein.

The project sits within the Midlands Integrated Biosciences Training Partnership and is funded by BBSRC in partnership with the University of Warwick, University of Birmingham, Aston University, Harper Adams University, Coventry University, and the University of Leicester. This is a PhD studentship rather than a postdoctoral or taught master's opportunity.

Supervisors: Professor Andy Wilson and Professor Teresa Carlomagno.

Application deadline: 23 November 2026.

Applicants interested in chemical biology, peptide science, structural biology, and therapeutic targeting of PPIs should apply through the University of Birmingham application portal and review the MIBTP information pages for full programme details.
