About this position
PhD Studentship: Watching a fungus fight back: mapping antimicrobial resistance in 3-D as it happens at the University of East Anglia is an interdisciplinary doctoral project exploring how fungi respond in the hours after exposure to non-lethal chemicals. The work is centred on Aspergillus fumigatus, a clinically important fungal species that can develop resistance relevant to both agriculture and human health.
The project asks a key biological question: when a fungus encounters a chemical stressor, does the response begin at the colony edge where the chemical arrives first, or does the organism respond across the whole colony? Using a technique developed in the supervisor’s lab, the project will map chemistry in three dimensions inside living fungal material without cutting it open. The approach combines microbiology with magnetic resonance methods, and offers training in advanced experimental techniques.
The student will work across two Norwich Research Park institutes, contributing to research that links fungal biology, antimicrobial resistance, and spatial chemical imaging. The project is suitable for applicants from biology, chemistry, physics, or computational backgrounds. No prior NMR experience is required because full training will be provided.
Funding: This is a 4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD studentship. It includes payment of tuition fees directly to the university, a stipend for living expenses at the 2026/27 rate of £21,805 per year, and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.
Entry requirements: At least UK equivalent of a Bachelor's (Honours) degree at 2:1. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in each category.
Supervisor: Dr Trey Koev.
Start date: 1 October 2027. Deadline: 30 November 2026.
