About this position

This ÅFORSK-funded postdoctoral scholarship at Linköping University offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated researcher to join the Physics and Electronics (FE) group within the Department of Science and Technology. The project focuses on the optimization of array antenna systems for imaging MIMO holographic staring radars, contributing to the design and characterization of intelligent devices and environments for wireless communications, localization, and sensing. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Andrés Alayón Glazunov, engaging in advanced research on multiple antenna systems and innovative approaches to array antenna synthesis for imaging radars.

The research aims to address key challenges in complex propagation environments by reducing beam scanning requirements, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing the performance of imaging radar systems. The project involves advanced MIMO and phased array antenna design, electromagnetic optimization, and experimental validation, tackling problems such as wide bandwidth, high efficiency, low mutual coupling, and compact system integration. The candidate will connect antenna design choices to propagation effects, radar performance, and overall system functionality, combining rigorous theoretical analysis with hands-on laboratory experimentation.

Applicants should hold a PhD in electrical engineering, electromagnetics, wireless engineering, engineering physics, applied physics, or a closely related field, awarded by a university outside Sweden within the past three years (exceptions for special circumstances such as parental leave or illness). Essential qualifications include hands-on experience in the design of phased or MIMO array antennas for millimeter wave applications, proficiency in electromagnetic simulation tools (CST Microwave Studio or HFSS), and programming languages (MATLAB, Python, or similar). Experience in experimental validation of antenna designs, including measurements in anechoic or reverberation chambers, is required. A strong publication record, theoretical and practical foundation in electromagnetic theory and antenna design, expertise in beamforming techniques, array signal processing, and excellent written and spoken English are mandatory. Knowledge of radar systems, signal processing, and wireless propagation is highly desirable.

The position is open to non-Swedish citizens only, and the total time for receiving a scholarship from Linköping University cannot exceed two years. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional year. The scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of 29,000 SEK/month, paid in two lump sums. Travel costs to and from Sweden are covered up to a maximum amount, and additional funding is available for conference participation. Please note that the scholarship does not confer pension rights, sick or maternity pay, or other work-related benefits.

To apply, candidates should prepare a cover letter describing their current and future research interests, a CV with a summary of previous research experience, names and contact information of at least two referees, a copy of their PhD diploma, and a copy of their passport. Applications should be sent to [email protected] and [email protected] by May 18th, 2026, marked with ITN-2026-00160. For further information, applicants may contact HR at [email protected]. The position offers the opportunity to publish in leading journals and present at major international conferences, including IEEE TAP and EuCAP, while developing an independent research profile in a vibrant academic environment.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
