About this position

Karolinska Institutet, one of the world's leading medical universities, invites applications for a postdoctoral scholarship in human immunology, focusing on cancer immunosurveillance and genetic diseases. The position is based in Professor Yenan Bryceson's internationally recognized research group at the Center of Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM), Department of Medicine Huddinge, Stockholm. The group specializes in identifying and mechanistically understanding novel primary immunodeficiency diseases, with particular attention to susceptibility to viral infection, hyperinflammation, and cancer. Research outcomes aim to inform improved cellular therapies against cancer and advance precision medicine.

As a postdoctoral fellow, you will join a multi-disciplinary team of experimentalists, computational biologists, lab technicians, and researchers, working in a collaborative and creative environment. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art cell culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry, and microscopy facilities. You will apply high-throughput sequencing and develop model systems, such as genome-editing of immune or induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) with patient-derived genetic variants, to map molecular interactions underlying immunodeficiencies. The group has a strong publication record in top journals, and you will be encouraged to develop scientific independence and contribute to breakthrough research ideas.

The project centers on defects in cytotoxic lymphocytes and hyperinflammatory syndromes with impaired lymphocyte development, differentiation, or function. A major focus is understanding gene regulation and identifying non-coding, disease-causing variants. You will integrate high-throughput sequencing data, set up and maintain workflows, and adapt existing tools to analyze high-dimensional data sets. The position offers opportunities to collaborate across disciplines and contribute to the development of precision diagnostics and treatments for severe primary immunodeficiency disorders.

Eligibility is restricted to foreign researchers who have obtained a doctorate or equivalent degree and have not completed any part of their academic education in Sweden. The scholarship is tax-free, set for twelve months at a time, and paid out on a six months basis, with a maximum duration of two years within four years of receiving the doctoral degree. Required qualifications include at least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal, documented experience in molecular biology and cell culture, expertise in R and statistics, excellent communication skills, and proficiency in English. Desirable skills include knowledge of genetics, immunology, epigenetics, experience with genome editing, iPSC culture, cell sorting, flow cytometry, Linux environment, programming, data integration, and workflow tools such as GitHub.

To apply, submit your application via the Varbi recruitment system, including a complete CV, list of publications, and a summary of current work (max one page) in English or Swedish. The application deadline is February 1, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Yenan Bryceson at [email protected]. Join Karolinska Institutet and contribute to innovative research in human immunology and cancer therapy.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
