About this position
CSIRO Industry PhD Program Project 2 is a four-year research training opportunity at Monash University focused on enabling migration to post-quantum cryptography (PQC). The project addresses the challenge of securing critical infrastructure against quantum attacks by developing techniques and frameworks that support trusted PQC migration.
The PhD is part of the CSIRO Industry PhD Program, which combines university research with CSIRO and industry participation. The student will work in an applied research environment designed to connect academic research with real-world industry challenges, with a structured professional development program and a 60-day industry engagement component.
The project aims to design methods, techniques, and a prototype to implement trusted PQC migration. This makes the opening particularly relevant for a student interested in cryptography, security engineering, and practical approaches to protecting large-scale infrastructure systems.
The supervisory and collaboration context includes Monash University, CSIRO, and an industry partner, giving the project a strong translational and interdisciplinary setting.

What's required
Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Australia on a permanent basis, meet the participating university PhD admission requirements and English language requirements, not have previously completed a PhD, be able to commence in the year of offer, and enrol as a full-time PhD student (part-time only if approved by the supervisory team and university policy). Candidates must be prepared to be located at the approved project location and comply with external enrolment procedures if required, and must complete CSIRO onboarding including mandatory government background checks. Ideally, the candidate should have a strong security background in cryptography, mathematics, information security, or a related field; previous industrial experience is not required but would be an advantage.
