About this position
This fully funded PhD position at Swansea University offers an exciting opportunity to join the seventh cohort of the Swansea University Research Excellence Scholarships (SURES) programme, commencing in October 2026. The project focuses on developing high-frequency vibration-assisted cleaning strategies for nanofiltration membranes, which are critical components in modern water treatment systems. These membranes are designed to remove salts, contaminants, and organic molecules from water, but their efficiency is often compromised by fouling—the accumulation of unwanted material on the membrane surface and within its pores. Fouling reduces water flow, increases energy consumption, and shortens membrane lifespan, while current cleaning methods can be only partially effective and may damage the membranes.
The research aims to address these challenges by investigating a novel, non-destructive cleaning technique using very high frequency vibrations (MHz–GHz). The project will employ large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and finite-volume continuum-based modelling to explore the complex interactions between vibration dynamics, hydrodynamics, and membrane-foulant surface forces. The ultimate goal is to optimize cleaning efficiency and support the development of next-generation, chemical-free cleaning technologies for water treatment. The multiscale modelling framework established in this PhD will also provide a foundation for future experimental validation and broader applications in environmental engineering.
Supervision will be provided by Dr Saikat Datta (primary supervisor), Dr Eifion Jewell, and Prof. Davide Deganello, all based at Swansea University. The research will be conducted at the Singleton Campus and Bay Campus, offering access to state-of-the-art facilities and a vibrant academic community. The SURES scholarship covers full tuition fees, a stipend at the UKRI standard rate, and a £1,000 annual training allowance to support immersive training, conference attendance, industry engagement, and international collaboration. The scholarship is available for up to three years, with students expected to submit their thesis within this period.
Eligibility requirements include a 1st class UK undergraduate degree (or equivalent international qualification), or a 2:1 UK undergraduate degree and a Distinction in a UK master’s degree (or international equivalent). Applicants with multiple master’s degrees must have a distinction in the most relevant degree. Current master’s students must have at least an upper-second-class (2:1) honours degree and a minimum grade average of 70% in taught modules, with dissertation submission by 30 September 2026. English language proficiency is required: IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 6.5 in each component) or an equivalent qualification recognised by Swansea University. Some applicants may need ATAS clearance, but this is not required for the scholarship application process.
Applications are open to both UK and international candidates. International applicants may be required to hold a SUIPRES scholarship, with further guidance provided if shortlisted. The application deadline is 18 May 2026. Informal enquiries to supervisors are encouraged prior to applying. For more information and to apply, visit the official Swansea University scholarship page.
This PhD position is ideal for candidates with a strong background in mechanical engineering, environmental science, chemical engineering, materials science, or physics, and a keen interest in water treatment technologies, membrane science, and advanced simulation methods.
