[Full tuition fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.] PhD studentship at the University of Exeter on developing a new variant effect predictor for multiple missense variants in the same protein molecule. This EPSRC-funded project tackles an important challenge in clinical genomics: most variant interpretation tools assess missense changes one at a time, even though many patients carry multiple variants in the same gene or protein. The project will develop and validate a new computa...

[Home tuition fees plus a Doctoral Stipend for up to 4 years.] PhD Studentship at the University of Exeter in From Variants to Placental Function: Using Cell-free DNA to Dissect the Functional Genomics of Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes . This project explores how genetic variants influence placental biology and adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preeclampsia, foetal growth restriction, and pre-term delivery. The research uses cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from maternal blood as a minimally invasive way to i...

About this position

The UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative Doctoral Landscape Award (FGx-DLA) offers a first cohort of PhD projects focused on understanding how genetic variation influences human biology, health and disease.

The programme includes 79 projects across wet-lab, computational and combined wet/dry-lab research. Students may work on CRISPR and genome editing, single-cell and spatial genomics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, stem-cell and organoid models, computational genomics, multi-omics, disease modelling and translational research.

Successful researchers will join a collaborative UK-wide community involving leading universities, researchers and partners across academia, healthcare and industry. The initiative spans six UK universities and is designed to support interdisciplinary research training in functional genomics and human disease.

The award is funded by the Medical Research Council and provides access to a broad portfolio of doctoral research opportunities in human functional genomics.
