Statement of purpose examples, with notes on why they work
Six short examples across fields and levels. ApplyKite wrote them; none is a real student's.
Master's in computer scienceMaster's · In my second year, our department's course registration site crashed on the first morning of every term. I asked to see the logs, found one database query running thousands of times per page, and rewrote it with a classmate over a weekend. The next term the site stayed up. That small fix showed me that the code I enjoy most is code other people rely on without noticing it.

That small fix showed me that the code I enjoy most is code other people rely on without noticing it.
Since then I have worked on systems that are harder to get right. For my final-year project I built a cache for a research computing cluster that cut the average job start time from four minutes to under one. Measuring it properly took longer than building it: I learned to design benchmarks, to distrust a single fast run and to write up results others could check. I want a master's that goes deeper into distributed systems, and a course on fault-tolerant computing is the one I would plan my first term around.
Why this works
- Opens with a real problem and what the writer did about it, not a line about loving computers.
- Gives a result that can be checked (four minutes to under one) instead of adjectives.
- Ends on the kind of course they want and how they would use it.
Master's in data scienceMaster's · I started working with data by accident. As a junior analyst at a regional bus operator, I was asked why passengers complained about late buses on routes that looked punctual in our reports. The reports averaged delays across the whole day, so the morning peak, when most people travelled, disappeared into the numbers. Rebuilding the measure by hour changed which routes the company fixed first.

Rebuilding the measure by hour changed which routes the company fixed first.
That question, whether a number measures what people actually experience, is what I want to study properly. I can clean data and build models in Python and SQL, but I have mostly learned by trial and error, and I want the statistical grounding to know when a result can be trusted. A programme that pairs causal inference with a project for an outside organisation would let me practise both sides: the methods, and explaining them to the people who make decisions.
Why this works
- Turns an ordinary work task into a clear question about data, which shows how the writer thinks.
- Is honest about a gap (self-taught statistics) and links it to what the programme teaches.
- Mentions tools once, in passing, then moves on to what they want to learn.
PhD in biologyPhD · During my master's project I spent four months trying to explain why some zebrafish larvae regrew damaged fin tissue faster than others raised in the same tank. The difference tracked the time of day the injury was made, which pointed me towards the circadian clock. I now want to understand how daily rhythms switch repair programmes on and off.

The difference tracked the time of day the injury was made, which pointed me towards the circadian clock. I now want to understand how daily rhythms switch repair programmes on and off.
In the lab I learned live imaging, how to prepare samples for single-cell sequencing and, most usefully, how to design a control I had not thought of. My first experiment confused feeding time with injury time; the second separated them, and the effect held. I would like to bring these methods to a group that studies regeneration in a system where the genetics allow clean tests, and to build a project that asks whether timing a treatment could improve repair.
Why this works
- States one research question in plain words, grown from the writer's own results.
- Admits a flaw in an experiment and shows what was learned from fixing it.
- Names methods inside a story of using them, not as a bare list.
PhD in engineeringPhD · Wind turbine blades are often inspected by people on ropes, about once a year. On a placement with a maintenance contractor, I watched a two-person team spend a full day on one blade and still miss a crack that a drone image caught a week later. I wanted to know why the image saw what the inspectors could not.

Wind turbine blades are often inspected by people on ropes, about once a year. On a placement with a maintenance contractor, I watched a two-person team spend a full day on one blade and still miss a crack that a drone image caught a week later. I wanted to know why the image saw what the inspectors could not.
My dissertation tried to answer that. I trained a model on 3,000 labelled drone images to find leading-edge erosion. It did well on clear days and poorly in low light, which is when many inspections happen. Fixing that is not only a machine learning problem: it depends on how the blade surface reflects light and on how damage grows between inspections. For a PhD, I want to combine physical models of erosion with image data, so that an inspection can predict where damage will appear next, not just report where it is.
Why this works
- Starts with a scene from real work, which makes the motivation believable.
- Reports a weak result honestly and uses it to define the PhD question.
- Closes with a research aim specific enough for a supervisor to judge the fit.
MBA or master's in businessMaster's · For three years I ran operations for my family's textile business, which supplies uniforms to schools. When two of our largest customers moved to online ordering, our margins fell by a fifth in one season. I rebuilt our pricing, moved half our production to made-to-order and won back one of the two contracts. I also saw how many of my decisions rested on instinct.

When two of our largest customers moved to online ordering, our margins fell by a fifth in one season. I rebuilt our pricing, moved half our production to made-to-order and won back one of the two contracts. I also saw how many of my decisions rested on instinct.
I want an MBA to replace some of that instinct with method. I am comfortable with spreadsheets and supplier negotiations, but I have never been taught corporate finance or how to judge an investment, and our next decision, whether to open a second workshop, needs both. I am looking for a strong operations track and a consulting project with a real company, because I learn fastest when a decision has consequences. Afterwards I plan to return to the business and lead its move into regional retail.
Why this works
- Uses figures from the writer's own business to show judgement, not job titles.
- Names exactly what is missing (corporate finance, judging an investment) and why it matters now.
- Has a plan for after the degree that follows from the story.
Postdoc or PhD in social sciencePostdoc · My doctoral research followed 40 families in two cities through their first year of a new childcare subsidy. The policy was designed to help mothers return to work, and on paper it did. In interviews, though, many mothers described taking shorter, less secure jobs that fitted the subsidised hours rather than the work they had trained for. Those conversations are where my current questions come from.

In interviews, though, many mothers described taking shorter, less secure jobs that fitted the subsidised hours rather than the work they had trained for. Those conversations are where my current questions come from.
In this position I want to test whether that pattern holds at scale. The group's linked survey and tax records would let me measure job quality, not just employment, for everyone who used the subsidy. I bring the qualitative side of the question; what I want to build is the quantitative side, through panel methods and difference-in-differences designs. In return, interview evidence on why people make the choices the numbers show could make the group's models easier to explain to policymakers.
Why this works
- Opens with the writer's own finding, which shows depth without listing credentials.
- Is clear about what the writer brings and what they want to learn in the role.
- Ties the plan to the group's own data, which shows they have read about the group.

What is a statement of purpose (SOP)?
A statement of purpose (SOP) is a short essay sent with a master's or PhD application: what you want to study, what you have done towards it and why this programme fits. Master's SOPs usually run 800 to 1,000 words, PhD ones 1,000 to 1,200; check the programme's limit. Use evidence, not adjectives, and name real research: ApplyKite lists more than 820,000 professors with their papers.
What admissions readers look for
- 01A real reason for the fieldOne moment or project that drew you in, not a lifelong passion.
- 02Proof from your own workWhat you did, what came of it and what you learned.
- 03Why this placeThe research, the people or the course, by name.
- 04Where it leadsWhat you want to do with the degree, and why it needs this one.

During my internship at a logistics start-up, I rebuilt the model that predicted late deliveries and cut its errors by a third.
That project taught me that most of data science is asking the right question before choosing a method.
TU Delft's research on reliable AI for transport is where I want to learn to build models people can trust.

Questions
What is an SOP (statement of purpose) generator?
The SOP generator writes a first draft of your statement of purpose for a master's, PhD or postdoc application. Answer a few short questions and get, free, a draft in your own words, or paste a statement you wrote and check it. Sign in and ApplyKite Twin writes it from your CV, for one programme or in general.
Is the SOP generator free?
Yes. The first draft and the checker on this page are free, with no sign-up. Sign in, free to start, for a statement of purpose written from your CV; the free plan includes monthly credits, and a pass gives you more.
How long should a statement of purpose be?
Follow the university's limit; most ask for one to two pages. Without a limit, aim for about 800 to 1,000 words for a master's and 1,000 to 1,200 for a PhD, in four or five paragraphs.
Can I use AI to write my SOP?
You can use it to start, but the statement must be yours. Many universities ask you to declare that the work is your own, so use a draft to get going, then rewrite it in your own voice and check every fact. The draft on this page is built only from your own answers, with nothing made up.
What is the difference between an SOP and a motivation letter?
A statement of purpose focuses on your academic path and research plans; a motivation letter, common in Europe, focuses more on why this programme and why you. They overlap a lot, and the generator can write either one. There is more on motivation letters in this guide.
Can I use it for an academic cover letter?
Yes. Choose the motivation letter mode: it suits an academic cover letter for a PhD or postdoc position, which also says why this position and why you. Keep it to one page and name the group's work you want to join.
What should a statement of purpose include?
Where your interest started, what you have done about it in your studies, projects or work, why this programme and its people fit, and what you want to do after. Specific examples beat general claims.
Can I write one for a specific university?
Yes. After you sign in, choose any opportunity on ApplyKite and your statement uses its real details, or write a general one to adapt for each application.
