About this position

Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Istituto di Biofisica (sede secondaria di Palermo) is offering two research contracts within the self-funded project “Modellazione realistica delle condizioni fisiologiche e patologiche del cervello”. The work is based in Palermo and is part of a broader neuroscience research effort supported by the Italian Neuroscience Research Infrastructure.

The selected researcher will work on real-scale models of the human and mouse hippocampus, focusing on their construction, validation, and simulation under physiological and pathological conditions. The project combines experimental anatomical, morphological, and electrophysiological information to reconstruct hippocampal circuits and study how network structure and dynamics relate to brain function.

The research activities include:

  • integrating heterogeneous experimental data such as cell composition, cell density, morphology, connectivity, and synaptic properties;
  • embedding existing or newly developed cellular and synaptic models into the circuit and calibrating them at network level;
  • running simulations on high-performance computing systems and analysing network activity, including oscillations and field signals;
  • exploring how pathological conditions affect circuit dynamics.

The position is scientifically framed within biological, physical, and chemical sciences and is coordinated by Dott. Luca Leonardo Bologna. The successful candidate will collaborate with national and international research groups while contributing to neuroscience infrastructure activities.

The contract offers a structured research environment focused on computational and systems neuroscience, with strong emphasis on realistic circuit modelling and simulation of hippocampal dynamics.

Funding details

Annual gross pay of €48,000 per contract; 2 contracts for 2 years.

What's required

Applicants must have a PhD in Neurosciences, Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematics and Computational Sciences, Physics, Chemical Sciences, Bioengineering, or Neurobiology, or an equivalent foreign degree. Candidates with a scientific-professional CV suitable for research may also apply, but the listed degrees are preferential. Required experience includes at least three years of research in the topic of the call, experience in developing and/or simulating computational neural network models, and familiarity with neural simulation environments such as NEURON, NEST or similar, as well as Python. English language knowledge is assessed in the interview; Italian language knowledge is required for non-Italian candidates and is also assessed in the interview. Preferred experience includes large-scale realistic neural network simulation, including on HPC systems, integration of anatomical, morphological and electrophysiological data for circuit reconstruction, and analysis of network activity. Candidates must also meet civil and political rights requirements, military service obligations where applicable, and general public-administration suitability conditions.

How to apply

Apply online through the CNR Selezioni Online portal at https://selezionionline.cnr.it. Complete the application form and upload the required identity document, CV, research proposal, selected publications, and publication list. Submit the application definitively to receive confirmation by email.
