About this position

Nottingham Trent University is offering a 2027 PhD studentship on Circular Cooking: Co-designing Food, Energy, and Resource Resilience with Nottingham Communities, as part of the Collaboratory Research Hub.

The research will investigate how lower-income households experience food insecurity beyond access to food, including their ability to prepare, cook, store and preserve food. It will examine how housing conditions, kitchen size and configuration, ventilation, energy infrastructure, appliance access, storage capacity, affordability and culturally situated cooking practices shape food and energy use.

Working with Himmah Food Bank and communities in Nottingham, the successful candidate will use participatory cooking sessions and investigation of household, housing and kitchen conditions. The project will identify barriers, opportunities and trade-offs related to reducing avoidable food and energy losses and enabling resource reuse, recovery and recirculation.

The PhD will co-develop a people-centred Circular Cooking Framework offering practical, affordable and culturally appropriate guidance for food banks, housing providers, local authorities and other community organisations. The research connects food insecurity, sustainable cooking, housing, energy resilience, circular resource systems and an inclusive Net Zero transition.

Supervision is provided by Amin Al-Habaibeh and Farah Shahrin of Nottingham Trent University, Serik Tokbolat of the University of Nottingham, and community partner Charlie Collins of Himmah Food Bank. The successful candidate will be enrolled at Nottingham Trent University. No eligibility criteria, funding details or application deadline are stated in the supplied announcement.
