PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in the School of Chemistry with Dr Trey Koev on mapping antimicrobial resistance in fungi in 3-D as it happens . The project asks how fungi such as Aspergillus fumigatus respond after exposure to antifungal or crop-protection chemicals, and whether resistance begins at the colony edge or across the whole organism. You will combine microbiology with analytical chemistry and magnetic resonance / NMR-based 3-D chemistry mapping in living fungal mater...

Durham University is advertising a PhD opportunity in the Physics of Life area, focused on the molecular grammar of biomolecular condensates and bacterial aggresome droplets . The project asks how living cells organize molecules into tiny liquid-like droplets, how these structures change physical properties, and how bacteria may use them to survive antibiotics and harsh conditions. The research is highly interdisciplinary and combines single-molecule microscopy , molecular biology , microbiology...

About this position

Two fully funded PhD positions are available jointly at the University of Strathclyde and University of Glasgow, focusing on cutting-edge research in biofilm profiling and antifungal drug development. The first project, led by Dr Karen Faulds and Dr Jason Brown, aims to develop sensitive, multiplexed tests for detecting bacteria and fungi in wound biofilms using surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and bionanosensor technology. The student will gain expertise in Raman spectroscopy, microbiology, molecular biology, and microscopy, working across both institutions. The second project, led by Dr Fraser Scott and Dr Jason Brown, investigates the clinical impact of novel antifungal compounds (Strathclyde Minor Groove Binders) on biofilms, addressing the urgent need for new antifungal therapies due to rising resistance.

This multidisciplinary project combines infection biology, synthetic organic chemistry, drug design, and advanced analytical techniques such as Biomolecular NMR and mass spectrometry. Both projects offer training in transferable skills and opportunities to collaborate with industry. Applicants should have a strong background in biology, chemistry, or related fields and be motivated to work in multidisciplinary teams.

Funding is provided through the NorthWestBioDTP, covering stipend and tuition. The application deadline is November 21, 2025. For more details and to apply, visit the project links or contact the supervisors.

Funding details
