About this position
PepPERMIT is a CDT studentship project at Imperial College London combining experimental peptide science with machine learning to understand how peptides enter living cells.
The research will systematically investigate peptide cellular uptake using high-throughput live-cell liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and computational analysis. The student will work on laboratory screening of peptides, peptide synthesis and the generation of chemical datasets describing peptide properties and uptake behaviour.
A major component of the project is the application of machine learning and deep learning to extract useful patterns from these datasets and prioritise peptides with desirable characteristics. By predicting cell permeability and incorporating it into peptide drug design, the research aims to help prevent promising therapeutic compounds from failing later in the drug-discovery pipeline.
The project is carried out in close collaboration with Rebecca Birolo and under the supervision of Anna Barnard and Pietro Sormanni. It offers an interdisciplinary research environment spanning peptide chemistry, live-cell analysis, high-throughput screening, computational modelling and drug discovery.
