About this position

This PhD position at KU Leuven focuses on the development of advanced methods for shock testing of space hardware, hosted by the Mecha(tro)nic System Dynamics division (LMSD). The research group, comprising over 100 researchers, is renowned for its blend of fundamental academic research and industrial applications, with strong dissemination in top journals and industry forums. Supervised by Professor Frank Naets, the project aims to optimize and de-risk the mechanical qualification process for space equipment by increasing the accuracy and realism of laboratory shock tests while reducing campaign duration.

The research will leverage multi-axis testing platforms driven by sophisticated Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) controllers. A comprehensive virtual shaker testing process will be developed, incorporating accurate models of electrodynamic coupled systems. The project will also integrate data-driven methodologies and AI algorithms to characterize and synthesize shock tests, ultimately enabling more precise and efficient testing procedures for space hardware.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics, with above-average academic performance. Experience with dynamic simulation, structural testing, multibody and finite-element simulation, and programming in MATLAB and/or Python is required. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in a structured and scientifically rigorous manner, engage in regular reporting and feedback, and collaborate effectively within a large, interdisciplinary team. The position offers opportunities for professional development in both academic and industrial directions, with further doctoral training provided by the KU Leuven Arenberg Doctoral School.
