About this position
The University of Oulu invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Cultural Anthropology within the EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network MITIME, “Entanglements of Migration and Time in Post-industrial Urban Europe.” The successful candidate will join the Department of Cultural Anthropology in the Faculty of Humanities and complete a PhD project provisionally titled Imagining and Representing Urban Pasts and Futures.
The research will investigate how industrialisation, de-industrialisation and labour migration shape migrants’ experiences of settlement, belonging and home-making, as well as urban redevelopment and place-branding. Research may address migration, temporality, labour, urban inequality, mobility, community relationships, urban futures and the efforts of municipal or regional actors to attract and retain newcomers. Fieldwork is expected primarily in Oulu, Finland, and/or Bochum, Germany, although relevant alternative case studies may be proposed.
The project is expected to combine multimodal ethnography, including interviews, participant observation and arts-based methods, with critical discourse analysis of policy documents and branding initiatives. The doctoral researcher will undertake secondments at the City of Oulu and Ruhr University Bochum and participate in MITIME training, workshops, summer schools and network activities. Supervision is provided by Professor Roger Norum at the University of Oulu and Dr Katrin Menke at Ruhr University Bochum.
The 36-month position begins on 1 February 2027 and offers a competitive MSCA gross living allowance of €3,696.72 per month, a €554.69 monthly mobility allowance and, where applicable, a €515.63 family allowance, subject to correction coefficients and statutory deductions. A six-month trial period applies.
Applicants need a relevant Master’s degree, no previously completed PhD, and must satisfy MSCA mobility rules concerning residence and work in Finland. Strong qualitative research experience, academic writing, English communication skills, interdisciplinary collaboration and willingness to travel are expected. Apply in English with a motivation letter, CV, research proposal, degree documents, transcripts and English-language evidence by 27 November 2026.
