About this position
The University of Oulu in Finland is recruiting a Doctoral Researcher in Anthropology for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network MITIME: Entanglements of Migration and Time in Post-industrial Urban Europe.
The PhD project, “Imagining and Representing Urban Pasts and Futures,” will investigate how industrialisation and de-industrialisation, labour migration, and urban transformation shape life in Europe’s post-industrial cities. Possible research questions include how migrants make homes and develop belonging in changing urban landscapes, how shifting labour markets and industrial legacies influence experiences and aspirations, and how cities represent their pasts and compete to attract new residents.
Methods may include ethnographic research, interviews, participant observation, arts-based methods, and critical analysis of policy and urban branding. The successful researcher will join an international cohort of 15 doctoral researchers across seven European universities and collaborate across migration studies, anthropology, sociology, and related fields.
The position is based at the University of Oulu, with joint supervision involving Oulu and Ruhr University Bochum and international secondments with Ruhr University Bochum and the City of Oulu. It offers three years of fully funded doctoral research, a competitive Marie Skłodowska-Curie salary, mobility allowance, and family allowance where applicable. The expected starting date is 1 February 2027, and the application deadline is 27 November 2026.
